With so many different types of massage available, choosing the right type of massage can feel a little overwhelming. A Touch of Serenity offers a wide variety of massage services so take some time to read this guide and learn about what type of massage might be best for you. You may be asking if you should choose a relaxing Swedish massage, a deeper therapeutic massage, or if you need something more specialized like lymphatic drainage or reflexology. The answer depends on what your body--and your mind--need most.
At A Touch of Serenity in Alexandria, VA, we offer a variety of massage and wellness services that are designed to meet different goals, from relaxation and stress relief to muscle tension, pregnancy comfort, circulation support, and overall well-being.
What is Swedish Massage? Is Swedish massage best for me?
Swedish massage is best for relaxation and stress relief. If you're new to massage, or simply want to relax, Swedish massage is an excellent place to start.
Swedish massage uses flowing, rhythmic strokes, kneading, and gentle-to-moderate pressure to help relax the muscles and calm the nervous system. It is one of the most popular types of massage because it provides a wonderful balance between relaxation and therapeutic benefits.
Swedish massage may be right for you if you:
Want to reduce everyday stress and tension
Prefer light to moderate pressure
Are new to massage
Want to improve relaxation and overall well-being
Feel mentally or physically exhausted
Simply need some time to unwind
Think of Swedish massage your go-to option when your primary goal is to relax, reset, and feel restored.
What is a Deep Tissue Massage? Is deep tissue the best type of massage for me?
A deep tissue massage is ideal if you constantly carry tension in your neck, shoulders, and back. Do your muscles feel tight after workouts, physical activity, or long hours of sitting at a desk? Deep tissue may be the better choice for you.
Deep tissue massage uses slower, more focused techniques and firmer pressure to address areas of persistent muscle tension. Rather than simply providing a relaxing experience, the goal is to work more targeted on specific areas of tightness and muscular discomfort.
Deep tissue massage may be right for you if you:
Experience persistent muscle tightness
Have tension in your neck, shoulders, or back
Participate in sports or regular physical activity
Spend long periods sitting or standing
Prefer firm to deep pressure
Want focused work on specific areas
NOTE: It is important to note that there is a common misconception with deep tissue massage. Many people have a "no pain, no gain" mindset with deep tissue massage. This mindset is often why some people end up feeling excessively sore after a massage. Deeper pressure is not necessarily better. If at any point during your massage, the pressure is uncomfortably painful, you need to let your therapist know! Your massage therapist can give you a phenomenal deep tissue massage within your comfort level. You do NOT need to be in excruciating pain in order for a deep tissue massage to be effective.
What is a prenatal massage?
Pregnancy can be an exciting experience, but it can also place significant physical demands on the mom's body.
Prenatal massage is specifically adapted for the needs of people who are pregnant. The techniques, positioning, and pressure are all intentionally modified to accommodate the common areas of pregnancy related tension. Most establishments that offer prenatal massage services will only provide sessions during your 2nd and 3rd trimester. They also conduct your prenatal massage with you in the side-lying position using pillows for your added comfort and support.
Prenatal massage may be right for you if you:
Are within your 2nd or 3rd trimester of pregnancy
Have back and hip tension
General muscular discomfort
Tired, achy muscles
Increased physical stress from pregnancy
Need to relax and have a moment of self-care before the baby arrives
Prenatal massage can be a wonderful way to make time for yourself while your body is going through so many changes.
NOTE: Because every pregnancy is different, its important to discuss massage therapy with your healthcare provider. It is also important to note that you MUST mention your pregnancy at the time of scheduling your massage appointment.
What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?
Lymphatic drainage massage is best when you need gentle specialized bodywork that focuses on the movement of the lymph fluid. Lymphatic drainage massage uses light, rhythmic movements designed to encourage the movement of lymph fluid through the body. Unlike deep tissue massage, this technique generally uses VERY gentle pressure.
Lymphatic drainage massage may be right for you if you:
Have just had surgery or have an upcoming surgery
Prefer very light pressure
Want a gentle, relaxing treatment
Are interested in supporting healthy lymphatic circulation
Experience feelings of puffiness or fluid retention
NOTE: Lymphatic drainage massage is very different from traditional massage, do not be surprised by the lightness of the touch. Since the purpose of a lymphatic massage is to improve the flow and circulation of the lymph, the pressure of this type of massage is intentionally light and gentle.
If you have a medical condition, recent surgery, or concerns about swelling or fluid retention, speak with your healthcare provider before scheduling a lymphatic drainage massage.
At A Touch of Serenity we offer
General Lymphatic Drainage Massage
Pre-operative lymphatic drainage massage
Post-operative lymphatic drainage massage (no drains. all incisions must be closed)
What is Reiki?
Reiki is best for relaxation and energetic well-being. If your idea of wellness goes beyond muscles and physical tension, Reiki offers a very different experience.
Reiki is a Japanese-inspired energy-based wellness practice that typically involves gentle touch or hands held just above the body. Many people choose Reiki as a way to create a quiet space for relaxation, reflection, and mindfulness.
Rather than focusing on manipulating muscles, Reiki provides a calming experience that may help you feel more centered and relaxed.
Reiki might be right for you if you:
Feel like your energy (Qi) is not in alignment
Want a deeply relaxing experience
Enjoy holistic wellness practices
Feel mentally overwhelmed or stressed
Want time for quiet introspective reflection
Are interested in exploring energy based wellness
At A Touch of Serenity, we offer stand alone Reiki services as well as Reiki + Massage infusion services.
What is reflexology?
Reflexology is best for focused foot and lower leg work. Reflexology focuses primarily on the feet and uses specific pressure techniques. Reflexology is based on the concept that particular areas of the feet correspond with different parts of the body.
Whether you're interested in reflexology specifically or simply want focused attention on tired feet, reflexology can be a wonderfully relaxing addition to your wellness routine.
Reflexology may be right for you if you:
Spend a lot of time standing or walking
Have tired, overworked feet
Enjoy focused pressure
Want to try an alternative type of massage
Which massage should you choose?
Still not sure which type of massage is best for you, start by thinking about your primary goal.
If your goal is... | You may want to consider... |
Relaxation and stress relief | Swedish massage |
Relieve chronic muscular tension | Deep tissue massage |
Pregnancy comfort | Prenatal massage |
Improve lymph circulation | Lymphatic drainage massage |
Energy based work | Reiki |
Tension relief in feet | Reflexology |
If you are still uncertain about which type of massage is best for you, we recommend starting with a classic Swedish massage. At A Touch of Serenity, new clients receive $30 off their first classic massage service. This is a great starting point to get you acquainted with massage and learning what your body may need in your future appointments.
Your Body Changes--Your Massage Can Too

That's the wonderful thing about massage therapy; there isn't any one massage that is right for everyone all the time.
